FreightMaster, the InXpress agency in Lille, gives your business in the United Kingdom a buffer stock of pallets in northern France: a secure warehouse at the Port of Lille logistics hub, booked entirely online, billed per started week, with no commitment. Each pallet then leaves for your French or European customers by palletised groupage, instead of crossing the Channel and customs order by order.

Who needs a buffer stock of pallets in France?

A buffer stock in France serves three profiles from the United Kingdom and Ireland: the manufacturer or brand that delivers French customers regularly and prefers one grouped load to single pallets; the importer whose containers land at Antwerp, Zeebrugge or Dunkirk and must hold pallets for some weeks; and the Amazon seller feeding the fulfilment centre in northern France.

Where is the warehouse and how do you reach it from the UK?

The secure warehouse sits at the Port of Lille logistics hub, in the north of France, about thirty kilometres from the Belgian border and roughly two hundred and twenty kilometres from Paris. It is reached by the A1, A22, A25 and A27 motorways and lies under two hours by road from the terminals of Dunkirk, Zeebrugge, Ghent and Antwerp.

From the United Kingdom, trailers arrive through the Dover Strait crossings, landing at Calais and Dunkirk, linked to Lille by the A16 and A25 motorways. Before confirmation the address shown is “Première Avenue, 59000 Lille”; the full delivery name appears in your customer area once the booking is confirmed.

How does the booking work, from goods-in to goods-out?

Everything is booked online, with no exchange of e-mails. You choose a sixty-minute goods-in slot, Monday to Friday between 8 am and 4 pm, at the earliest on the second working day after booking. Confirmation is automatic on payment, or immediate for a customer on account. Goods-out is booked the same way, in full or line by line.

  1. Open your business account online with your VAT number or tax ID, or request a quote.
  2. Declare your goods lines (format, quantity, height, weight) and book the goods-in slot.
  3. Your haulier delivers the wrapped, customs-cleared pallets in the chosen slot; actual receipt opens the first week.
  4. Book each goods-out: your own haulier (plate and driver entered online) or “Release and ship”, a palletised shipment to your customers in France or elsewhere in Europe.

Which pallets are accepted, and which are refused?

The service takes wrapped, stable pallets of dry goods kept at ambient temperature: up to two hundred and seventy centimetres high, two and a half tonnes per pallet, thirty-three pallets and ten goods lines per order. Refused are dangerous goods, perishables, excise goods such as alcohol or tobacco, and anything not yet in free circulation in the European Union.

AcceptedRefused
Wrapped, stable pallets, floor footprint from 20 to 240 cm, up to 270 cm high, up to 2.5 tonnesLoose cartons, unstable or oversized pallets
Up to 33 pallets and 10 goods lines per orderDangerous goods (ADR), perishables, temperature-controlled products
Dry goods in free circulation in the European UnionExcise goods (alcohol, tobacco), goods not yet customs-cleared
Partial release, line by lineParcel preparation, item-level labelling, returns

How is the price of a buffer stock built?

The price has four parts: a goods-in handling charge per pallet, storage billed on the floor footprint in square metres per started week, a goods-out handling charge per pallet, and preparation with pallet labelling on release. A business established outside France is invoiced without French VAT. There is no minimum stay, no subscription and no commitment.

  • Floor footprint: an 80 × 120 pallet takes less space than a 100 × 120 and costs less per week; beyond 80 × 120, handling is charged at the oversize rate.
  • Exact price: the online estimator on the French site shows it for your pallet count, format and duration; this guide quotes no figures.

UK supplier delivering to France: what does a drop point in Lille change?

Without a buffer stock, every French order crosses the Channel and customs on its own, with its own declarations and lead time. With a drop point in Lille, you clear one grouped load into the EU, then serve your French customers by domestic palletised groupage, with no border left to cross for each order.

Importer after a container: how do you link the port and the storage?

Your container lands at Antwerp, Zeebrugge or Dunkirk instead of Felixstowe or Southampton, so goods meant for European customers enter the EU once, without passing through UK customs first. Two routes lead to Lille: devanning at the port, then a palletised delivery, or delivery of the full container to a devanning contractor near Lille.

Either way, goods enter the warehouse customs-cleared, wrapped and declared line by line.

Amazon seller: how do you feed the northern France fulfilment centre in waves?

The Amazon fulfilment centre of northern France is under an hour’s drive from Lille. A buffer stock in Lille lets you send your pallets in small waves, at the pace of the delivery appointments you obtain, rather than sending a full trailer from the United Kingdom and risking a refusal or a rescheduled appointment on arrival.

We receive, hold, then prepare and label each pallet on release. We do not open cartons or label items individually: your pallets must arrive compliant with Amazon’s requirements.

Customs and VAT: what should you check before the first pallet?

Pallets from the United Kingdom cross a customs border: they must be cleared for import into the EU before goods-in, because the warehouse is not a bonded warehouse. Holding stock in France and selling from it may also create an obligation to register for French VAT. Check both points with your customs agent and tax adviser.

  • EORI number: an EU EORI number is needed to declare the goods for import into France.
  • VAT number or tax ID: requested when the account is opened.
  • CMR consignment note: it travels with every transport to Lille and names the warehouse as the place of delivery.
  • From Ireland: an intra-EU flow with no customs, but the French VAT question remains.

Which routes lead from the UK and Ireland to Lille?

Freight from Great Britain reaches Lille through the Dover Strait: the ferries to Calais and Dunkirk and the Channel Tunnel land a short motorway run from the warehouse, while western Channel crossings to Normandy add a longer road leg. Irish freight arrives on direct sailings to Dunkirk or Cherbourg, inside the EU and without customs.

The crossing used depends on the transport you book, and customs checks can add time at the border.

Buffer stock, your own warehouse or a 3PL: which one should you choose?

A buffer stock booked online suits volumes from a few pallets to a few dozen, for a few weeks to a few months, with no commitment. Your own warehouse in France is justified once volumes are permanent and you have a team on site. A 3PL with order picking becomes necessary as soon as you ship parcels item by item.

Need order picking? What does the partner warehouse in Calais offer?

If you need more than pallet storage, FreightMaster also offers full outsourced logistics at a partner warehouse in Calais, on the French side of the Channel crossings: goods-in, inspection, put-away, storage, order picking and dispatch to France, the rest of Europe and the United Kingdom. It is quoted on your specification, and the Lille agency replies within one working day.

Calais is the main freight gateway between the United Kingdom and the continent: in 2025, 1,714,187 lorries passed through its port, more than one in two of those crossing the Strait of Dover (source: Port Boulogne Calais, January 2026), and the Channel Tunnel shuttle takes 35 minutes from Folkestone. Since 1 January 2021, every movement of goods between the United Kingdom and the European Union needs a customs declaration (source: French customs, douane.gouv.fr): stock held in Calais lets a UK business serve its EU customers from inside the Union instead of clearing customs on every order. Customs formalities stay with your customs broker or freight forwarder.

  • Calais partner warehouse: full logistics with order picking at the level set in the quote (pallet, carton or item), for permanent stock, e-commerce and regular flows.
  • Lille, Port of Lille: whole pallets stored per started week, booked online, no item-level picking.
  • Distances from Calais town centre (car, OpenStreetMap/OSRM, October 2026): Channel Tunnel terminal about 6 km, Boulogne-sur-Mer about 34 km, Dunkirk about 43 km, Lille about 110 km.

Which mistakes should you avoid with a buffer stock?

The most common mistakes concern the preparation of the flow, not the warehouse: unwrapped pallets refused at receipt, a slot booked before the goods have cleared customs, several goods lines mixed on one pallet, or goods from the United Kingdom arriving without import clearance. Book the goods-in slot with the crossing and the customs in mind.

How do you get started in a few minutes?

Open a free business account online with your VAT number or tax ID, declare your pallets and book your first goods-in slot: confirmation is automatic. If you would also like us to move the goods from the United Kingdom to Lille, calculate the price online for 1 to 3 pallets, or request a quote for a larger load.

FAQ

Is there a minimum storage period?
No. Storage is billed per started week, on a rolling week that starts on the day your pallets are actually received. You can leave a pallet for a single week or several months, with no subscription and no commitment. Each goods-out is booked online whenever you need it.
Which pallets are accepted at the Lille warehouse?
Wrapped, stable pallets of dry goods at ambient temperature, up to 270 cm high and 2.5 tonnes each, with a floor footprint between 20 and 240 cm, up to 33 pallets and 10 goods lines per order. Dangerous goods, perishables, temperature-controlled products, excise goods, loose cartons and goods not yet customs-cleared are refused.
Can goods from the UK go straight into the warehouse?
Only once they are cleared for import into the EU. The warehouse is not a bonded warehouse, so pallets from the United Kingdom need an import declaration, with an EU EORI number, before goods-in. Arrange it with your customs agent before you book the goods-in slot, so that the pallets are not refused at receipt.
Do I need to register for VAT in France to store pallets in Lille?
The storage itself is invoiced without French VAT to businesses established outside France. Holding stock in France and selling from it may, depending on your flows and customers, create an obligation to register for French VAT, and a business established outside the EU may need a fiscal representative. Confirm this with your tax adviser before the first goods-in.
Can I release my pallets in several batches?
Yes. Goods-out is booked line by line: two pallets to one customer, then five to another, the rest left in stock. Each release uses your own haulier, with plate and driver name entered online, or “Release and ship”, which books a palletised shipment to your customers in France or elsewhere in Europe in the same order.
Do I need a French company to open an account?
No. The account is opened in the name of your business established in the United Kingdom, Ireland or elsewhere, with its VAT number or tax ID. No French subsidiary is needed to book, pay online and follow your stock; the customs and VAT points above remain your responsibility.
